Poland has received a new batch of Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 tanks purchased from the United States, significantly strengthening the country’s armored capabilities. According to the Polish Armaments Agency, 32 units recently arrived in Polish territory, raising to 117 the total number of tanks of this model already delivered.

Adding the previously received 116 M1A1FEP units, the Polish Army now operates 233 Abrams tanks in various versions.

Deliveries progress and exceed 46% of the contract

With the new batch, 46.8% of the 250 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks stipulated in the April 5, 2022 contract have already been delivered. Deliveries are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026, within the established schedule. The first shipment, containing 28 units, took place in January 2025.

The tanks will be assigned to the 18th Mechanized Division named after General Tadeusz Buk, specifically to the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade and the 19th Mechanized Brigade.

Six-billion-dollar contract includes extensive logistical package

The agreement signed in 2022, valued at 6 billion dollars, includes not only the 250 tanks, but also a complete set of systems, weapons, and support vehicles. The package includes:

  • 250 AN/VLQ-12 CREW Duke IED countermeasure systems
  • 26 M88A2 HERCULES recovery vehicles
  • 17 M1110 bridge launchers
  • 276 M2 .50-caliber machine guns
  • 500 M240C 7.62 mm machine guns
  • 15 AGT1500 gas turbine engines

The package was designed to ensure that the Polish Army receives not only the tanks, but also the entire operational infrastructure required to use them.

Maintenance remains a critical challenge

After arriving in the country, the tanks are transferred to the Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne facility in Poznań, which has been operating for over a year as a Regional Competence Center for Abrams maintenance. There, technicians inspect sensitive components that may have been affected during maritime transport.

Despite the specialized center, Poland still faces significant limitations in technical support for the Abrams. No company in Poland or Europe is currently qualified to perform full maintenance on AGT1500 gas turbine engines.

For this reason, major repairs still require the engines to be shipped to the United States, to the Army depot in Aniston, Alabama — the only place in the world authorized and equipped to perform full overhauls of this type of engine.

Strategic reinforcement amid ongoing military modernization

The continuous arrival of Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 tanks represents an important step forward in the modernization of the Polish Armed Forces, which aim to expand their land-defense capabilities in the face of the current security environment in Eastern Europe. To perform major repairs, the engines must be sent to the United States, where they are serviced at the Army depot in Aniston, Alabama — the only place in the world where a complete replacement of the AGT1500C gas turbine engine components can be carried out.
